If you have successfully completed your Web presentation, all you have to do is upload it to the Internet. This can be done in several ways, and I recommend you to use Dreamweaver, its data transfer function. To this end, it is necessary to set the so-called FTP account and in this lesson you will see how it is done.
Before we move on to something more specific, I have to remind you that in order to publish the presentation, it is necessary to register the corresponding Web address, the domain. If you haven’t done it yet, it’s best to contact your Internet provider and ask for information related to the so-called FTP access. Only after that you can adjust your account, start the Site Management function. I will do this by double-clicking on the button with the name of my site and immediately go to the section called Servers. If I then click on the button with the plus sign, I will be able to create a new connection. To begin with, you need to enter the name of the server, which can be anything. I will use the name of the site for this purpose, so I recommend you to do the same. For connection, the so-called File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is usually used, and if your Internet provider uses a different system, simply click on this arrow and select the appropriate option. In the next field, you must enter the exact address of your FTP server. It usually starts with ftp, but there are other solutions, so it is best to strictly follow the instructions you received from your Internet provider. Next, enter the username and password, and for security reasons, this second information will be displayed in the form of dots. The field named Root Directory can be left blank, unless your provider insists that a corresponding parameter be entered in it. You probably won’t need the options hidden in the second part of this frame, unless you run into a problem. In this case, it is best to consult with someone who knows this topic better, because you will not achieve much by entering parameters at random.
Since in this way I have entered everything necessary to establish an FTP connection, all that remains for me is to try it. So I’ll click on the Test button and wait for Dreamweaver to check these parameters. If everything is fine, a message like this should appear on the screen, so I can click on the OK button and return to the main frame. If you don’t want to keep typing your password, check if the option to save it is active. I will keep the current state and confirm the entered parameters by selecting the Save button. As you can see, my new FTP connection has now appeared in the list of supported servers, so I can close this frame as well.
In this way, you can define an unlimited number of connections and simultaneously maintain different Web sites. Dreamweaver will automatically monitor all changes, so it will not happen that individual pages end up on the wrong server.
