If you pay attention to the text at the top of the screen while surfing the Internet, you must have noticed that the addresses of individual pages are aligned with their content. In this example, it can be clearly seen that one part of the Web address completely matches the title of the page. This address is much easier to read and remember than the combination of letters and numbers that is common for WordPress sites.

This can be seen very nicely in the following example, where instead of the real address, only ?p=11 is written. I believe that this information will not be very understandable to ordinary visitors of my site, although its meaning is quite simple – post number 11 is shown. On the other hand, this way of addressing is quite logical for WordPress, because computer programs handle data best when they are expressed in numerical terms. form.

This kind of information is difficult for ordinary people to understand, so you have to make an effort to present it in a different form. This can be achieved in WordPress by using the Permalinks function, so I will first go to the administration panel and select the appropriate option from the Settings menu. After that, a new section will appear on the screen, and if you pay attention to its address, you will notice that it is now much more understandable. As you can see, WordPress allows you to automatically change the way web addresses are generated and displayed by selecting the appropriate option. I currently have the first option selected, which means that numerical data will also appear in the addresses. If you want the date and name of the post to be used instead, choose the second option, and you can achieve a similar effect by clicking on the third item. The fourth option allows you to use the serial number of the post, while the fifth is linked exclusively to its name. This system suits me the most, so I will opt for the item called Post Name and activate the new parameters by selecting the Save Changes button.

To show you how all this looks in practice, I will go back to my site and choose one of the existing posts. As you can see, his address is now quite understandable, which should make navigation easier and enable better navigation.

Before I finish this lesson, I would like to draw your attention to one more detail. Namely, if you use a local server in combination with appropriate software such as Wamp, Bitnami, Mamp, etc. it is necessary to make certain adjustments. For the purposes of this course, I installed Wamp on my computer, so it won’t be difficult for me to show you what it’s really about. It is enough to look for the icon representing the local server in the lower right corner of the screen and go through the menu system until an option called rewrite module appears on the screen. It is already included in my case, so I was able to change the addresses. On the other hand, if you use a public Web server, you should not have any particular problems, because it is understood that this option is already active with them.

In the end, I have to warn you that changes in addresses can adversely affect users who have already visited your site. This practically means that all the pages that were previously recorded in the so-called Bookmarks suddenly become unavailable because after the system change they are located at completely different addresses.
