About Lesson

Sooner or later you will want to transfer your data to another WordPress site or to download content that is interesting to you. All this can be done through the administration panel, by using some of the functions found in the Tools menu. I will first show you how to use the Export function, prepare the data you want to transfer to a new Web site. As you can see, it is possible to transfer the entire content of the site to an XML file with a single move of the mouse. If that doesn’t suit you, you can limit yourself to posts, web pages or feedback, and there is a possibility to define an appropriate time frame. I don’t want to risk anything, so I will opt for the first option and simply click on this button. WordPress will automatically create a new XML file and transfer all data from the current database into it. I must emphasize right away that this is purely textual information, but it will be quite enough for other content such as pictures, video clips, etc. to automatically appear in the new location.

Now that I have everything I need, it’s time to show you how this data can be transferred to the new site. To begin with, it is necessary to start the Import function in order for a number of new options to appear on the screen. As you can see, WordPress allows you to transfer data from different sources to your new site. It is enough to select the appropriate option from this list and wait for the system to do its part. I downloaded all the data from another WordPress site, so I will click on the last option and go to the next step. Since importing data requires a corresponding plug-in that I haven’t installed yet, a box with a description will appear on the screen, and I have no choice but to click on the Install Now button and select the Activate Plugin & Run Importer option to finally start this process. Now I need to select the Choose File button to display the contents of my disk and look for a file that contains all the necessary data. Since it is on my Desktop, I will go to the folder of the same name, select the appropriate XML document and complete this part of the work with Open. If I then click on the Upload file end Import button, the system will start downloading the data. If a problem arises, you will have to make certain corrections yourself. In my case, among the contents that are planned for transmission are also posts originating from an unknown author. In fact, there is no user with that name on my new site, so the system offers me the option to automatically create it or to attribute all of its contributions to another person. I will choose the second option and choose one of the existing users from the list. I have two unknown authors, so I will solve both cases in the same way. Finally, there is an option that allows you to transfer all attached documents (Import Attachments), but you have to keep in mind that it can only be used in cases where all data is on an active Web server. If you used your local computer for these purposes, WordPress will not be able to access these files, so you have to copy them later. With me, all data is available via the Internet, so I will activate this option and finally click on the Submit button. This procedure can take several minutes depending on the amount of data to be transferred. In any case, as soon as a message like this appears on the screen – All done, have fun, you can continue working freely because it means that all data from the old site has been successfully transferred to the new location.

This can be checked most easily by selecting the Posts option, after which a series of new posts should appear on the screen. The same applies to other content, such as illustrations and video clips, which are normally found in the Media section. The best confirmation, however, is the normal functioning of the entire site, which in my case obviously does not represent any problem.
